San Angelo storms are not rare
NWS San Angelo calls severe hail common in West Central Texas, peaking in April, May and June. On May 21, 2020, a storm sat over the city for about 90 minutes and dropped hail up to 3 inches. On May 23, 2024, baseball size hail came with 73 mph winds. Commercial roofs take those hits across the whole surface, and the damage often is not visible from the parking lot.
Where to check storm reports
NWS San Angelo: weather.gov/sjt, office at 7654 Knickerbocker Road, San Angelo, TX 76904, phone (325) 944-0526.
Local Storm Reports: linked from the NWS San Angelo site as View Storm Reports. These list reported hail sizes, wind gusts and where they happened.
Submit a Storm Report: also linked from the NWS site, if you saw hail or damage yourself.
Write down the date and time of the storm and save any photos. Your roofer and your insurance carrier will both ask.
What to look for after hail on a commercial roof
- New leaks or wet ceiling tiles inside
- Dents in metal edge, coping, vents and rooftop unit housings
- Lifted or missing edge metal and flashing after high wind
- Torn, punctured or loose membrane
- Granule loss or bruising on modified bitumen
- Debris on the roof and clogged drains
Do not send untrained people onto a wet or damaged roof. Look from the ground and from inside, and let a roofer go up.
Insurance and documentation
Your insurance carrier decides what is covered. What a roofer can do is document the condition of the roof with photos and written notes, so the conversation with your carrier is based on facts. This is not insurance advice, so check with your agent about your policy and deadlines.
