West Texas weather

What San Angelo weather does to a flat roof.

The numbers below come from the National Weather Service office in San Angelo and NOAA climate normals. They are why we inspect for impact damage, heat aging and drainage on every roof here.

Spring hail

NWS San Angelo calls severe hail common in West Central Texas, peaking in April, May and June. On May 21, 2020, a storm sat over the city for about 90 minutes and dropped hail up to 3 inches, damaging roofs across San Angelo and Goodfellow AFB.

Damaging wind

The May 23, 2024 storm brought baseball size hail with 73 mph winds. Gusts like that pull at roof edges, coping and rooftop units first, so attachment is part of every inspection.

Long, hot summers

San Angelo averages about 119 days a year at 90°F or hotter, with July highs near 97°F. Heat and UV age membranes, sealants and coatings, which is where reflective surfaces earn their keep.

Short, heavy rain

Only about 21 inches of rain falls in a normal year, but May averages over 3 inches and storms deliver it fast. Clogged drains and low spots show up in those bursts.

Services

Commercial roof repair, replacement and more.

Five services, one approach: look at the whole roof, explain what we found, then write a scope you can take to your approvers.

  • 01

    Commercial roof repair

Leaks traced to the real entry point, then repaired and written up, so one fix does not hide the next problem.

  • 02

    Hail damage assessment

An on-roof inspection after a storm, with photos and notes on membrane, seams, metal and rooftop equipment.

  • 03

    Roof replacement

Tear-off or recover options for roofs at the end of their life, with the GAF warranty the project qualifies for.

  • 04

    Restoration and coatings

For roofs that are still dry underneath, a coating can add service life for less than a new roof.

  • 05

    New construction roofing

Roof systems for new buildings and additions, coordinated with the general contractor’s schedule.

  • 01

What should a San Angelo business do after a hail storm?

Have the roof inspected before the next rain, even if nothing is leaking yet. Hail can bruise membranes, crack coatings and dent metal without an obvious leak. NWS San Angelo notes that severe hail in West Central Texas peaks in April, May and June, so a spring inspection and a written record of the roof's condition make any later insurance conversation easier.

  • 02

Does a commercial re-roof in San Angelo need a permit?

Yes. The City of San Angelo issues commercial building permits through Development Services, and its permit reports list a separate Roof Only, Commercial permit type. Roofing contractors must also register with the city's building official. We build permitting into the project schedule.

  • 03

Is San Angelo in the Texas windstorm (TWIA) inspection area?

No. The Texas Department of Insurance designated catastrophe area covers 14 coastal counties and part of Harris County. Tom Green County is not one of them, so a TDI windstorm certificate is not part of a typical San Angelo roof project. Wind and hail still drive the design here, along with the manufacturer's requirements and your insurer's terms.

  • 04

Which roof systems make sense for West Texas heat and hail?

It depends on the building. Reflective single-ply membranes such as TPO and PVC, and restoration coatings on sound roofs, help with heat. For hail, the assembly matters as much as the membrane: cover boards, insulation and membrane thickness all change how a roof takes an impact. We compare options for your roof side by side.

  • 05

Do you work outside the San Angelo city limits?

Yes. We serve commercial and industrial properties across Tom Green County, including communities such as Wall, Christoval, Grape Creek, Veribest and Water Valley, and the wider Concho Valley. Call to ask about a building farther out.

  • 06

Can San Angelo ISD, the city or other public agencies buy roofing through TIPS?

Mammoth Services, LLC is a TIPS awarded vendor for roofing under contract 24060401, so TIPS member agencies can use that competitively procured contract.
